Historical Context & Significance

The Final Months in Auvers-sur-Oise Van Gogh painted this landscape in June 1890, just weeks before his death. After leaving the asylum in Saint-Rémy in May 1890, he moved to the small town of Auvers-sur-Oise, just north of Paris, to be closer to his brother Theo and to be treated by Dr. Paul Gachet. During his 70 days in Auvers, Van Gogh experienced an intense burst of creativity, producing over 70 works.

The Artist's Vision The painting captures the sweeping agricultural fields surrounding the town from an elevated vantage point—a perspective Van Gogh frequently favored. If you look closely at the middle ground on the right, you can spot the tiny carriage on the white road and the faint smoke of a train, which give the painting its alternative title.
