Subject Matter: This piece is a famous example of a "painting within a painting." It depicts a corner of Matisse's studio in Issy-les-Moulineaux, France. In the foreground, a sculptor's wooden tripod stand holds a pink vase filled with trailing nasturtiums. In the background, leaning against the studio wall, is his own iconic 1909 masterpiece, Dance I (which is now housed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York). A striped chair is partially visible on the left.
