Edvard Munch’s The Scream (1893) stands as one of the most recognizable masterworks of modern art and a cornerstone of Expressionism. The composition captures an agonized figure clutching its face in existential dread against the backdrop of a dramatic, blood-orange and fiery yellow sunset over the Oslofjord. Swirling, rhythmic brushstrokes warp the sky and dark blue waters into a psychological tempest, contrasted sharply by the rigid, receding diagonal railing of the bridge where two distant figures stroll unaware. More than a portrait of a person screaming, Munch envisioned the work as an expression of nature pierced by a vast, unending shriek, translating intense internal anxiety, alienation, and raw human vulnerability into visual form.
