A Macke - Caffe Turco (23.5 in x 31.5 in)

August Macke (1887–1914) was a prominent member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), an influential collective of Expressionist artists (Beugnet & Ravetto-Biagioli, 2022). In April 1914, Macke embarked on a brief but historically significant trip to Tunisia alongside fellow artists Paul Klee and Louis Moilliet.

This journey to North Africa served as a major turning point for the artists, marking a profound shift in their engagement with light and color (Beugnet & Ravetto-Biagioli, 2022). The vibrant, luminous atmosphere of Tunisia inspired Macke and his peers to adopt "pure colourisation," breaking down their compositions into abstract blocks of blue, red, and gold to capture the environment (Beugnet & Ravetto-Biagioli, 2022). Türkisches Café was painted shortly after this trip and is considered one of Macke's final masterpieces. Tragically, his flourishing career was cut short just months later when he died in battle in September 1914 during the opening weeks of World War I (Malcolm, n.d.).
